Mercredi le 22 mai

Première journée de fine pluie. Ce matin, intéressante conversation avec le capitaine. Il nous a confié que pendant sa carrière, plusieurs passagers étaient des écrivains. Justement, hier, Suzanne faisait remarquer que cette expérience sur l'eau devait être propice pour la concentration et à l'imaginaire littéraire. Il y a eu aussi un groupe de passager musicien: un band sur la bateau. 

Le capitaine nous a dit que la vue de tant de baleines hier méritait une phrase à notre journal de bord.

À ce jour, nous commençons à mieux connaître les membres de l'équipage: tous sympathiques. 

Les repas sont bons et variés: cuisine maison. Le service se fait au table. Chacun a sa place attribuée.

Jeudi 23 mai

Belle journée ensoleillée. Pas de nuage à l'horizon et la mer est calme. 

Comme l'a dit l'animateur de radio, Joel Le Bigo, dans une entrevue accordée à une collègue de Radio Canada, on sait tous ce qu'est un hôtel à 5  étoiles. vivre l'expérience cargo c'est être sous 5,000 étoiles. Cela résume bien l'expérience. Un bel endroit pour bien voir la mer est dans la section bar du Pilot deck. Cela permet de ne pas rester dans sa cabine et de bien voir ciel & mer. On lit  beaucoup et se repose beaucoup aussi. On pense à sa vie.

Cette belle vie. Ce beau voyage qui nous conduira à Venise. Ce sera une semaine plus mouvementée. Cinq fois le tour du bateau permet de marcher 2 km. Cela est notre routine quotidienne après le repas du soir.

Cette vie en est une à huis clos. Cela fait penser au texte de Jean-Paul Sartre dans lequel il a écrit sa célèbre phrase: l'enfer c'est les autres. Mais sur le Dalian, ce n'est pas le cas. Pas pour nous en tout cas :-)!

Vendredi 24 mai

Nous avons une tendance de beaucoup dormir (Grant en tout cas)... on lit... on s'endors... on lit...

C'est peut-être une fatigue accumulée qui sort.

Pendant l'après-midi, le chef ingénieur nous a fait une visite guidée de la salle des machines: très impressionnante. En plus de l'immense moteur diesel 7 cylindres qui produit 20 000 chevaux vapeur il y a 3 génératrices, un système de traitement des eaux usées, des pompes de toutes sortes et pleins d'autres bidules. Et c'est super propre même si c'est plutôt bruyant. 

Elizabeth et Josh nous ont invités chez eux pour regarder le film Robin des bois (version avec Russell Crowe) et nous sommes montés sur le Pilot deck vers 23h pour voir les étoiles... il ne faisait pas encore très noir et il y avait des nuages donc il n'y en avait pas beaucoup de visibles... mais la lune qui jouait à cache-cache avec les nuages était belle.

Samedi 25 mai

Hier le temps sur le bateau a encore avancé d'une heure... et le matin arrive trop vite.

Jusqu'ici le mouvement le plus frappant du bateau était le «pitch» (sur l'axe avant - arrière) mais aujourd'hui il roule de gauche à droite... un mouvement assez importante. 

Le temps de descendre du bateau approche: nous sommes prêts pour le retour à la vie terrestre.

Samedi soir, il y avait encore un party barbecue dans le bar. L'équipage, surtout les philipinos se sont livrés au karioké souvent avec plus d'énergie que d'habilité... mais tout le monde s'est bien amusé. 

Plus tard ils ont dansé jusqu'aux petites heures de la matin pendant que nous étions déjà au lit.

Le capitaine a remis à Grant les prévisions de la météo des prochains jours sachant que cela l'intéressait. Belle intention.... rien de très différent.

Dimanche 26 mai

Nous avons fait la grâce matinée, nos corps ne se sont pas encore adaptés aux changements d'heure chaque 2 jours et les matins arrivent trop vites. Nous avons donc manquées le déjeuner ce matin pour la première fois (nous le prenons d'habitude entre 7h30 et au plus tard 8h). 

Encore des dauphins près du bateau ce matin. Les allergies de Grant ont recommencé donc on présume qu'on approche de la terre. La température monte aussi même si c'était une journée plutôt nuageuse. Nous avons vu un seul bateau qui semblait être une bateau de croisière qui a passé du sud au nord devant nous à 15 milles de distance. Comme à tous les jours nous marchons 2 km sur le bateau. Mais aujourd'hui, Grant a fait un vidéo qu'il a commenté lors de notre promenade. Les 4 passagers, Elisabeth, la Suédoise, Josh, l'États-Uniens et nous ont témoigné de leur expérience dans le vidéo.   

Le dimanche est le jour de congé pour l'équipage manoeuvre. On entend des jeux vidéos près de la cuisine. Jour pour s'amuser un peu.
 

Wednesday 22 May

Our first rain, rather light. We had an interesting conversation with the captain. He told us that several of his passengers were writers. Suzanne remarked the yesterday that this experience on the water should encourage concentration and literary imagination. There was also a group of musicians: so they had a band on the ship. He also indicated that the number of whales that we saw was worth mentioning in the ship's log.We are starting to get to know members of the crew, all of them are kind and friendly.
The meals are good and there is a variety, more like home cooked then restaurant. We are served at the table, and each of us has his or her assigned place.

Thursday May 23
Beautiful sunny day, no clouds and the sea is calm.
As the radio announcer Joel Le Bigo said in an interview with one of his colleagues on the CBC French network, "we all know what a  5 star hotel is, being on a freighter is to be under 5000 stars".
That gives a feeling for the experience.
The best place to watch the sea is in the bar section of the Pilot deck, it allows us to get out of our cabin and see the sky and the sea while at the same time being protected from the wind and the weather. We read a lot and take life easy. One tends to contemplate ones life...

What a life, this wonderful trip that is taking us to Venice. This week will be more active, our 5 laps around the ship to do our 2 km each evening after supper.
This is a life in a bubble, it makes one think of the quote by Jean-Paul Sartre "It is the others that are hell".
But on the Dalian that is not the case, not for us anyway :-)!

Friday May 24

We have a tendency to sleep a lot (at least Grant does)... read... sleep... read.
Perhaps it is an accumulated fatigue.
This afternoon the chief engineer took us on a tour of the engine room: impressive. As well as the immense 7 cylinder diesel that produces 20,000 horsepower there are 3 generators, a water treatment system, all sorts of pumps and other machinery. It is super clean but rather noisy.

Elizabeth andt Josh invited us to their place to watch the film Robin Hood (the version with Russell Crowe) and we went up to the Pilot deck around 11 pm to see the stars.. it wasn't very dark yet and there were clouds so not many stars were visible... but a beautiful moon was playing hide and seek with the clouds.

Samedi 25 mai

Last night the hour was again advanced on the ship... the morning arrives too quickly.
Up to now the pitch of the ship (movement on the front - rear axis) was the dominant motion but today the roll (from side to side) was much more noticeable.  
The moment when we will leave the ship is approaching, we are ready to return to life on land.
This evening there was again a BBQ party in the bar on the Pilot deck. The crew, especially the Filipinos, entertain us and themselves with karioke performances, often with more energy the ability... but everyone has a good time.
Later they danced till the small hours of the morning, long after we were already in bed.

The captain gave Grant the weather forecast because he had indicated an interest. A kind gesture, but no new information.

Sunday 26 May

We slept in, we are not yet used to the time zone changes that we have had every 2 days or so. So we missed breakfast for the first time (normally we have breakfast between 7:30 am and 8am).

This morning there were again dolphins near the ship. Grant's allergies have started up again so we assume that we are getting close to land. Also the temperature rose somewhat despite it being a cloudy day.
We saw a single ship which appeared to be a cruise ship which passed in front of us from south to north at a distance of 15 miles.
As usual we walked our 2 km, but today Grant made a video with appropriate comments during the walk. All 4 passengers (Elisabeth - from Sweden, Josh - from the US, and us) then got together to make a video of our observations on the experience.
Sunday is the crew's day off. We hear video games near the kitchen. A day to have fun.
